Tandem Jump in South Dakota

The sky over South Dakota does most of the talking. Drop zones here sit under a lot of open air, and the ground below shifts hard as you cross the state, flat, quilted farmland in the east giving way to the broken rock of the Badlands and the dark pine ridges of the Black Hills out west. Operators run tandem jumps, Accelerated Freefall (AFF) progression for people chasing a license, and slots for licensed fun jumpers. Fewer people means less traffic in the pattern, and that tends to make for a calmer, less rushed day at the DZ.

Jumping runs with the warm months, roughly late spring into early fall. That's when the air settles, the winds behave, and drop zones can fly a full schedule most days. Most are within reach of a town with a bed and a meal nearby. For AFF students, an unbroken season is worth a lot, you can string jumps together without long gaps between levels, and tandem students get the clearest look at the Missouri River bending below and the geometry of the fields laid out flat to the horizon.
