Coached Jump in Oklahoma

Oklahoma stacks a lot of ground under one open sky. Prairie runs flat to the horizon in the center of the state, then buckles into the ancient granite of the Wichita Mountains in the southwest and rises toward the Ozark Plateau in the east. Drop zones sit out where that space opens up, so the view under canopy tends to be the Red River threading through farmland and the scatter of man-made lakes catching light. It reads well for a first tandem and just as well for someone with a few hundred jumps.

A first tandem here starts on the ground, with training before you ever board the plane. From there it's a climb past 10,000 feet, then the door, you exit strapped to an instructor who has done this thousands of times. On the way down, the patchwork sorts itself out: crop rows, pockets of woodland, and the distant grid of Oklahoma City or Tulsa. The state's generally clear air means most jumpers get the long view rather than a wall of haze.
