Common questions

Ask your instructor first, because some drop zones restrict gloves during early AFF or static line progression specifically so students learn handle location with bare hands. Once gloves are permitted, the rule that matters is rehearsal: put the actual gloves on, then do your practice touches on the ground until finding the cutaway and reserve handles is automatic through the leather. A glove you have never rehearsed in is a variable you introduced on the wrong jump. Thin summer gloves cost you far less feel than any insulated model, so start there.

Freefall adds a windchill most people underestimate, so ground temperature is a poor guide. Air cools roughly 3 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit per thousand feet, which means a pleasant 65 degree afternoon can be near freezing at 13,500 feet before you add 120 mph of relative wind. Many jumpers reach for thin tackified gloves somewhere around the 50s on the ground and switch to an insulated or wind-sealed pair when it drops into the 30s and 40s. Cold hands are a safety issue, not a comfort one, because numb fingers are slow fingers on a toggle or a handle.

Snug, with no slack at the fingertips and no bunching in the palm. A loose glove rotates on your hand under load, which is how people lose the feel of a gripper mid-exit, and excess material at the wrist can catch air and balloon. Most skydiving gloves run smaller than general-purpose work gloves, so check the manufacturer's chart rather than assuming your usual size. Leather palms stretch and mold with a few jumps, so a pair that feels correct out of the package will often feel slightly loose by the end of the season.

You can, and plenty of winter jumpers do, but understand the tradeoff before you take one to altitude. Alpine gloves are built for a pole grip and a lift ticket, not for locating a soft pillow handle by touch, and a gauntlet cuff can interfere with a wrist-mounted altimeter or a sleeve. If you go this route, use a five-finger model rather than a mitt, size it tight, and rehearse every handle repeatedly on the ground. A purpose-built winter jump glove gives up some warmth and gives back a lot of feel, which is usually the better trade.

Three options are common. You can wear a wrist or forearm mount over the glove, which is simplest and works with any pair.
